Welcome To SGEA

Story of Sunderban

SGEA is an organization in Sundarban, India. We work in Sundarban coastal region. SGEA do all-inclusive mangrove conservation and restoration that help the world mitigate and adapt to climate change, safeguard biodiversity, and boost the happiness of the most vulnerable coastal people.

The vision is the great synthesis which we dream- here, the population will live and grow with its rich natural environment, not exploiting it, rather exploring it to find newer means to develop the region, thereby grow themselves.

Welcome To SGEA

Community visit and outreach programmes

The SGEA has been a reliable point of confluence and convergence between institutional academic practices and on-site, actual ground-level field work/investigation.

As such, it is no wonder that quite a few institutions, colleges and universities have been in constant touch with us and have conducted multiple visits for environmental/ecological studies, indigenous language and community documentation including culture and folklore, and have organised science, cultural, and theatre fairs and workshops for the children of the islands, over the past many years with an annual footfall of no less than a hundred people per year.

Mangrove Plantation and conservation

SGEA carries out plantation of mangroves over four months every year, along with distributing other plants to the residents of the nearby villages. This is the direct intervention part of the program, aiming to gradually restore the natural forest cover and ecology on the island through regular afforestation.

Poribesh Mela (Environmental fair)

SGEA organised Parivesh Mela, annually. The fair includes cultural programmes, children’s and adults’ competitions as well as sports, all revolving around environmental awareness, with a special focus on the Sunderbans and mangroves. Awareness sessions and workshops held in schools have also been employed by SGEA to engage children in the ongoing effort for preserving the local biodiversity.

Building community Environmental awareness

Involve the youth and school children in the environmentally allied activities to create awareness and inspire voluntary action from them, along with the capacity building within the community.

Ensuring improved quality of education and Library activities

Cultivate a culture of prioritizing children’s education by spreading awareness regarding its importance and value in gaining better living conditions, and work with local schools to provide more interactive and relevant curricular.

Securing access to primary health care

Improve the people’s consciousness about their health and establish a system that helps them avail basic healthcare facilities, through regular health checkups and accessible medical resources.

Livelihood activities for women

Generate environmentally conscious occupations by encouraging usage of organic fertilizers, locally produced seeds, kitchen gardens, organic fish farming and similar other practices. Women have an important role to play in the development of the livelihood of the people of sundarban. We are given them special training to them so that they can come up in an entrepreneur place.

Native Tree Plantation

Due to increased pressure on land use several of the wild types, which are a great source of genes governing useful traits, are disappearing. We prioritise native tree plantation as it plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance as well as its viable in nutritional aspects. Native trees are well adapted to the local climate, soil conditions, and support the growth of native wildlife. By planting native tree species, we promote biodiversity, restore natural habitats, and create a resilient ecosystem.

Seed Bank for conservation of indigenous variety seed

One of the most important factors in developing sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural systems is the right to seed. It is very important to preserve and promote seeds that have been available locally for years. We are promoting these indigenous seeds through our Dhanya gola (Seed bank) by exchanging seeds from the farmers.

Disaster Risk Reduction

The people of Sundarban will suffer more and more natural disaster as the weather changed every day. Natural disaster is a daily occurrence in Sundarban coastal region. Almost every year many people are affected by cyclone or in flood. In that case it is very important for people to be aware of this and also to get education for them to counter this issue. We believe that preparedness is very important but also immediate response is also very important.
